As if the seven forfeits against the San Jose State University’s Women’s Volleyball team weren’t enough controversy, add the suspension of associate head coach and player lawsuit against the NCAA to the list of the ongoing trans athlete issues.
SJSU’s volleyball co-captain, Brook Slusser, 21, joined in a class action lawsuit against the NCAA against their alleged Title IX violations and their policy of allowing transgender athletes to compete on women’s teams under certain conditions such as sharing personal spaces, locker rooms and hotel rooms on away games, etc. along with the claim that there are safety concerns as well. Slusser is also alleging the team has made deliberate efforts to hide that Blaire Fleming was a biological male.
Melissa Batie-Smoose is claiming the university is trying to silence her and has suspended her after she joined the Title IX complaint. Batie-Smoose is supporting players concerns of having a biological male on the roster and is also alleging favoritism for transgender athlete Fleming over Slusser.
Batie-Smoose said, “Safety is being taken away from women, fair play is taken away from women… we need more and more people to do this and fight this fight because women’s sports as we know it right now will be forever changed.”
Boise State and the University of Wyoming have forfeited their second matches of the season against SJSU, along with Southern Utah, Utah State and Nevada State for a total of seven thus far.
