The Real ID deadline is approaching soon and will begin on May 7, 2025. This will impact anyone flying on domestic flights. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said about 81% of travelers already have a Real ID compliant license, state identification card or a passport allowing them passage through security at airports.

Real ID was initiated following the terror attacks on September 11, 2001. Congress passed the Real ID Act in 2005, proving one’s identity.

To obtain a Real ID, you will need to visit the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) with documents proving your name, birth date, Social Security Number, along with two additional proofs of residency.

To prove your identity, make sure you have your birth certificate, a U.S. passport, or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad. For people with name changes, make sure you have a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or a court-ordered name change document.

To prove your Social Security Number (SSN), you’ll need your Social Security Card or a W-2 form. You’ll need to obtain a letter from the Social Security Administration if you don’t have a SSN.

To prove your residency you’ll need two documents including utility bills, bank and/or insurance statements. They must also be dated within the last 90 days.

Non U.S. citizens may need to provide a Green Card, a Permanent Resident Card or other documents that prove your lawful status.

If your driver’s license or state-issued ID has either a gold or black star in the top right corner, you have already completed the Real ID process.
