On June 13, 1967, President Lyndon B. Johnson nominated Thurgood Marshall to be the first African American justice on the Supreme Court. Marshall, a civil rights lawyer had won 29 of his 32 cases he argued in the Supreme Court. Marshall retired in 1991 after serving 24 years on the bench.
