On May 30, 1868, the first Memorial Day was observed in the US. The holiday was originally called Decoration Day and created to commemorate the sacrifices of soldiers in the Civil War. In 1967, the holiday transitioned to Memorial Day, a national day to honor and remember all fallen soldiers.
