On May 29, 1790, Rhode Island was the last of the thirteen original colonies to ratify the U.S. Constitution and was admitted to the Union as the thirteenth state. Rhode Island, known as the “Ocean State,” is only 48 miles long and 37 miles wide measuring at about 1,545 square miles.
