On May 22, 1843, “The Great Emigration” began on the Oregon Trail. About 1,000 pioneers departed on the first major ‘wagon train’ to the northwest, travelling from Elm Grove, Missouri on the Oregon Trail. Over 100 wagons loaded with men, women and children steered their horses, along with a herd of cattle and 5,000 oxen.
