On May 13, 1846, U.S. Congress declared war on Mexico. President James K. Polk requested the declaration of war on Mexico over the dispute of Texas. Congress voted overwhelmingly in favor of the request. America ended up winning the war in 1848 and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo transferred the land of Texas to the U.S.
