On April 30, 1789, New York City held the first ever Presidential Inauguration and 

President George Washington delivered the first inaugural address. Vice President John Adams stood beside Washington as he took the oath of office while standing on the second floor of Federal Hall. Hundreds of citizens, houses of Congress, American officials, New York state notables and diplomats from France and Spain were at the ceremony.
