On April 16, 1929, the Cleveland Indians became the first MLB team to play with numbers on the back of each player’s jersey. In their season opener against the Detroit Tigers, numbers made it easier for broadcasters, fans and scorekeepers to identify players. The New York Yankees were also supposed to debut numbered jerseys on this day, but their season opener got rained out.
