On February 14, 1859, Oregon became the 33rd state in the Union. The U.S. acquired the area through the “Oregon Treaty” with Great Britain in 1846, and then was established as a territory when U.S. Congress approved it in 1848. The Oregon territory originally stretched from the Pacific Ocean to the Rocky Mountains and included all of present-day Oregon, Washington, Idaho and parts of Montana and Wyoming.
