On January 30, 1948, political and spiritual leader of the Indian independence movement, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was assassinated in New Delhi by Hindu extremist, Nathuram Vinayak Godse. Gandhi was 78-years-old and had been advocating for civil disobedience and peaceful protests.
