On January 17, 1916, Rodman Wanamaker, an American businessman and heir to the Wanamaker’s department store, formed the idea of a Professional Golfers Association (PGA). Wanamaker hosted a luncheon to discuss and influence a group of professional and amateur golfers about the need to form an official, national organization for golf. After a series of meetings, within 3 months the PGA was officially formed.
