London’s Supreme Court Defines a Woman

In the U.K.’s Supreme Court unanimous ruling Wednesday, it said the definition of a woman is someone who is born a biologic female, and excludes transgender people.

The ruling says that the U.K. Equality Act means trans women can be excluded from some groups and single-sex services for women including hospital wards, refuges, and sports. Trans women can also be excluded from single-sex spaces including changing rooms, swimming areas, homeless shelters and medical or counseling services provided only to women.

Deputy President of the Supreme Court Patrick Hodge said, “The unanimous decision of this court is that the terms ‘women’ and ‘sex’ in the Equality Act 2010 refer to a biological woman and biological sex.”
