Hawaii’s Kilauea Volcano Erupts

Lava spewed over 1,000 feet into the air on Sunday from Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano. The eruption lasted for several hours and released huge plumes of ash and other volcanic materials including volcanic rock, and volcanic glass shards, known as Pele’s hair, into the skies.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, the activity at the north vent began about 4:15 p.m. local time and lasted until around 9:45 p.m.  and stopped at the south vent about 10:25 p.m. local time.

Fortunately, the lava remained within Kilauea’s summit caldera and residential areas were not affected. Citizens and visitors are warned of high levels of volcanic gas including water vapor, carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide in the air. Sulfur dioxide can create volcanic smog; know as vog, which can cause respiratory or other health problems.
