Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, 69, is the first Pope in history born in the United States. Although Prevost was born in Chicago, he spent many years in Peru, where he also has citizenship.

Pope Francis made Prevost a cardinal in 2023 and prior to being elected as the new leader of the Catholic Church; he was the head of the church’s Dicastery for Bishops.

Prevost will take the name of Leo XIV.
