Sadly, the death toll from the 6.8 magnitude earthquake that shook Morocco just 2 and a half days ago is already up to 2,600, with 2,500 people injured. As rescue workers are racing against the clock to find survivors, it is feared how much these numbers are going to keep rising in the coming days. There is no estimates on the number of people still missing. Destroyed roads are making it difficult for rescuers to get to many of the areas and access to some of the remote villages in the foothill of the mountain are extremely difficult to get through. Moroccan military reached the epicenter of the earthquake, Ighil, with supplies and soldiers to aid in the search and rescue.
Tents with food, water and first aid/”field hospitals” are being set up in villages where they can be, but are at capacity. Most buildings and houses were reduced to rubble, and uninhabitable. Ones that have withstood complete demolishment are dangerously unstable. There is currently no running water due to pipe damage. Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has accepted aid offers from Spain, Britain, United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
